The University of Arizona Office of Public Safety (OPS) reminds the campus community to stay alert and keep safe as traffic picks up with the beginning of the academic year.

“With the return of students, faculty and staff, our campus becomes busier than ever,” said Chief Safety Officer Steve Patterson. “It is important to stay alert at all times and avoid distractions as we navigate our crowded streets, sidewalks and bike paths. Together, we can make this a safe and successful year by staying aware and looking out for one another.”

The OPS team recommends #WildcatsTakeCare by following these safety tips:

Pedestrians

  • Walk on sidewalks, not in roadways.
  • If there is no sidewalk, use multiuse paths where available.
  • Keep alert at all times. Do not be distracted by cellphones.
  • Make sure you have at least one earbud out of your ear when walking.
  • Always use crosswalks, marked midblock crossings and crosswalk-marked intersections.
  • Look for vehicles in all directions before crossing a street.
  • Obey pedestrian signals at locations where they are installed.

Bicycles

  • Always wear a helmet.
  • Keep alert at all times. Do not use cellphones while biking or riding.
  • Please be aware of 'Walk Your Bike Zone' signs, placed in areas with heavy pedestrian foot traffic, including the UA Mall and the Women's Plaza near Centennial Hall. Please take the time to walk your bike in these areas.
  • Use the UArrive map to find the best bike routes (and other transportation information) on campus.

Motor vehicles

  • Be aware of pedestrians, bicyclists and skateboarders.
  • Be ready to yield.
  • Never pass vehicles stopped at a crosswalk or midblock crossing.
  • Slow down where large groups may be present, including near residence halls, around college buildings and in popular areas around the boundaries of campus.
  • Obey speed limits.
