Think T.U.R.K.E.Y. before gobbling up Thanksgiving fun
Thanksgiving break is upon us. Amid the excitement of the well-deserved break and the time to unwind, we encourage you to think T.U.R.K.E.Y. before you take part in Thanksgiving festivities.
T – Take the Time to Lock Up.
- Remove all personal items from your car. Items like earbuds, charging cables, CatCards, etc. could attract the attention of would-be thieves.
- Check to make sure that all windows are fully secured. Leaving a window cracked makes entry to your car faster and easier.
- Lock your car. If you have a steering wheel lock, make sure to use it. Park in well-lit areas and avoid dark and secluded spots that give criminals more opportunity.
U – Use parking and transportation safety resources.
- There’s still time to sign up for Parking & Transportation’s Thanksgiving Temporary Holiday Vehicle Storage Parking Permit, allowing you to leave your vehicle in the 6th Street Parking Garage while you're away. This location will have enhanced security. Permits are limited, so be sure to secure your spot.
- The University of Arizona has partnered with Tucson International Airport to make your holiday travel hassle-free. There area limited number of complimentary Lyft codes for your journey from the main campus to Tucson International Airport.
R – Remember to breathe.
The end of the semester and holiday breaks can bring a lot of mixed feelings and potential stress. They're also a time to reflect on what's been working and what you're looking forward to. Whether you're headed home, staying on campus, spending the break with others or by yourself, there are countless ways to practice self-care. Take things one step at a time and remember that mental health support comes in many forms- remember to breathe, take a break, go for a walk, spend time in nature, or connect with someone. If you need support, Campus Health's Counseling & Psych Services (CAPS) has many options to support students.
K – Keep Your Home Safe.
- Even if you are just going across town, don’t leave your valuables in plain view in your home, dorm room, or vehicle. Lock your doors, and turn off alarm clocks, lights, etc.
- Throw away any trash and perishable food to avoid pests or unpleasant smells upon your return.
- Close and lock your windows to secure your space.
E – Eliminate distractions.
For students staying on campus for the long holiday weekend, there is typically a decrease in the number of people on the campus during Thanksgiving break. Make sure you focus on your surroundings.
When leaving your room make sure to:
- Avoid walking alone after dark. Walk in well-lit areas.
- If you are out, do not accept drinks from people you do not know.
- Use alternate transportation such as the Parking & Transportation Services Night Cat, and taxis or ride-hailing services such as Uber and Lyft. Some campus services may have limited hours or are unavailable during campus breaks. Call UAPD at 520-621-8273 if you need assistance. When available, UAPD may provide a walking or driving escort to your on-campus location or vehicle.
Y – You make a difference.
During Thanksgiving, and year round, you can assist in maintaining a safe campus environment by reporting suspicious activity to the University of Arizona Police Department. If a crime is occurring, dial 9-1-1. Learn about other reporting options.
