Community Service Officers are a key element of the University of Arizona Police Department efforts to maintain safety across campus. Previously known as "Safety Aides," community service officers continue to provide vital support in ensuring the well-being of students, faculty and staff.

There are two types of CSOs working on campus: full-time civilians wear gray shirts and student officers wear red. Both groups wear UAPD patches on their uniforms, clearly marking them as part of the university’s dedicated law enforcement team.

CSOs play a broad role in campus security. They patrol university grounds, monitor buildings and parking lots, and are responsible for locking and unlocking university facilities. Additionally, they respond to low-priority alarms, assist with emergency blue light phone calls, and handle minor medical emergencies. CSOs also support the police by taking reports for incidents such as larceny and criminal damage, as well as managing lost property.

Through these varied tasks, CSOs help ensure that the campus remains a safe and secure environment for everyone. They play an important role in UAPD’s comprehensive approach to campus safety.
