5 Tips to Help Prevent Bike Theft
The University of Arizona is proud to be home to approximately 10,000 bicyclists who ride their bikes to campus for work and school. Having a robust bicycle community means it can also be a target for bicycle thieves. At the start of each school year, the University of Arizona Police Department (UAPD) notes an increase in bicycle thefts.
Crime Prevention is a shared responsibility and we encourage the campus community to report any suspicious activity they see.
Anyone who observes suspicious activity or sees someone suspicious loitering near a bike rack, is asked to contact the UAPD by utilizing an emergency blue light phone or by dialing 9-1-1. Listed below are ways that you can safeguard your bicycle against theft.
Bicycle Safety Tips
- Use a High-Quality Lock: Invest in a robust U-lock, as recommended by the UAPD. Chain or cable locks are less secure and can be easily compromised.
- Lock Your Bicycle Properly: Secure both wheels and the frame to a bike rack. Additionally, lock the bicycle seat to the frame to enhance security.
- Register Your Bicycle: Register your bike with Parking and Transportation Services. This free service helps deter theft, aids in recovery, and confirms ownership. Registration materials are available at the Parking and Transportation Services Building at 1117 E. Sixth St.
- Engrave Your Bicycle: Mark your bike with an identification number on the underside of the frame’s diagonal bar, crank, derailleur, or front forks. This makes it harder for thieves to strip the bike for parts.
- Choose a Safe Location: Always secure your bicycle in a well-lit, heavily trafficked area.
