The University of Arizona has many parking garages and parking lots on campus. The U of A Police Department (UAPD) and Parking & Transportation Services (PTS) spent the summer working to improve your parking experience by enhancing the safety, security and convenience for all users.

Parking garage upgrades

“We made significant upgrades to the Tucson campus parking garage equipment including the installation of new gates and payment equipment,” said Jim Sayre, Executive Director of Parking & Transportation Services.

“We also transitioned to 24/7 garage operations which will increase the availability to monitor facilities and assist customers through our Motorist Assistance Program. Whether it’s for a jumpstart, door unlock or tire inflation, we are here to help,” he said.

Upgraded License Plate Recognition (LPR) cameras were installed at most entry and exit lanes. These will help streamline parking procedures by reading license plates and granting access to those with valid, registered permits. Read more about the upgrades.

Parking garage safety

In 2023, UAPD and PTS handed out more than 400 free steering wheel locks to students, faculty and staff. PTS will continue to hand out steering wheel locks this year. Please visit PTS offices to pick one up. Police patrol and security presence in the parking facilities was increased last year and will remain the same this year.

“We still want people to be aware of their surroundings walking to and from parking garages or parking lots,” said UAPD Chief Chris Olson. “Walk with a friend or group of friends, especially at night, or take advantage of campus safety escorts,” he said.

When available, UAPD may provide a walking or driving escort to your on-campus location or vehicle if you call them at 520-621-8273. The LiveSafe App, ASUA SafeRide or PTS Night Cat are also helpful safety resources.

5 safety tips to consider when parking in a garage or lot:

  • Do not leave valuable items unattended in your car. If you need to leave belongings in the car, put them in the locked trunk so they are out of sight.
  • Lock the doors and take the keys with you. Make sure that the vehicle and the windows are closed. Utilizing a steering wheel lock is encouraged.
  • Park in well-lit, populated areas and be aware of your surroundings.
  • Carry small loads at a time, keeping arms free for movement or ask friends for help unloading your car.
  • When returning to your car, have your keys ready to use and as soon as you are safely in your vehicle, lock the door.

Chief Olson said, “Crime prevention is everyone’s responsibility. Please do not delay in calling law enforcement. Contact UAPD at 520-621-8273 to report suspicious activity in a timely manner. And if you need help, dial 911 or use one of the emergency blue light phones located throughout the campus.”
